Hobo Cannabis Company’s retail stores mimic the warm, natural, and organic nature of their offerings themselves.
Our millwork shop worked with the Hobo design team to bring their South Granville location to life. The Hobo team themselves declare that they “tend to keep things simple”, and the minimal retail design was simple yet exquisitely beautiful.
We used maple throughout the entire space and for all of the millwork. We fabricated the POS counters, the shelving units lining the walls (we refer to these as “stick shelves”), the two frosted glass centre tables with the wood tops, the front privacy partition, and the merchandise wall. To finish all of the millwork we used a product called Osmo Oil. We often use this when we are after a more “natural” finish in terms of both how the wood looks and feels. No shine, no gloss – it really keeps things soft and organic.
We pre-built most of the store in sections in our millwork shop. For example, we built the vertical supports for the stick shelves in the workshop, transported them, and then built the horizontal supports on-site to bring it all together. The design aesthetic called for no fasteners in order to keep with the organic feel of the store. In order to build everything efficiently we plugged the screw holes with offcuts from the maple. This effectively concealed any fasteners while ensuring we could produce the store millwork efficiently from a cost and time perspective.
With the growth of the retail cannabis market across Canada we are loving seeing the unique designs and concepts popping up across the country. Hobo Cannabis Company has 8 stores in Canada (and more coming), with a buying experience that is warm, welcoming, and without stigma.
