We love bringing our clients’ dreams + dream spaces to life by building their custom pieces. It’s an incredibly fulfilling process to start with first understanding the inspiration behind the piece, bringing it to life in a functional design, and then seeing it transform the final space that is rests in. Going custom is not as daunting as one would think either, and much more satisfying than shopping at the store!
While your build team will be there to support you throughout your entire journey, here are a few ways to get started if you’re toying with the idea of going custom in your home, office, or anywhere you’ve got a space to fill!
Get Inspired
Think outside the box and let your brain go wild! If needed and/or possible, let this be your opportunity and use this as a base with which to create the room you really want. Start by browsing some design sites for inspiration. I love sites that showcase beautiful spaces that are still accessible for real people with normal jobs. A few of my faves include Remodelista and Design Sponge. Create a Pinterest board or save your favourite images and keep them handy, and by all means, feel free to draw up some sketches if you’re having fun!
Bring it Back to Your Space
Now that you’re amped, take a look at your actual space and it’s configuration. How big is the room? Take measurements. Look at your existing furniture. If needed, draw out the room and your ideal spot for your piece. Bring out that tape measure and get some dimensions down for your ideal size, shape, height. And don’t forget space for chairs or seating if this is a table! Tip: keep a little tape measure in your purse or easily accessible in your home. You can get them super cheap at a dollar store or on Amazon.com and they ALWAYS come in handy!
Materials
There are so many materials to choose from out there, which is great in that it gives you room to find options that are going to work with your amazing design but also your budget. Will you be using wood? Do some research into wood options to get an idea of what type of wood will work best for your piece. How about other materials, such as steel or upholstery? Don’t get married to any particular material yet, but having some ideas in mind is a great place to start when meeting with your build team.
Budget
If you have your concept in mind and some helpful images to boot, working with your build team will allow you to discuss what’s feasible both in terms of function and design, but also your budget.
It’s no surprise that custom furniture is going to be more expensive than what you will get in the store. But that’s why it’s so special. You dreamt it. You designed it. You’re investing in something that will last a lifetime. And it was made just for you.
