Although Pennyroyal Coffee is fresh on the scene here in Vancouver, for owners and operators Maxime and Cynthia, Pennyroyal has been a passionate part of their lives for the past few years.
The first Pennyroyal Coffee was located in Jakarta, Indonesia. The duo ran the buzzing coffee shop for 2 years before deciding that they were ready to relocate to Canada – Max’s home country. After landing in Vancouver, it took some time for them to narrow down the perfect location for their next venture. When they came across a cozy space in Vancouver’s Hastings-Sunrise neighbourhood it felt juuuust right. The neighbourhood truly exudes a community vibe, and that’s exactly what Max and Cynthia were looking for with their new coffee shop.
The new Pennyroyal Coffee has been thoughtfully designed to be that friendly neighbourhood coffee shop that welcomes you in every single day. It was important for the team that the cafe be inviting and comfortable, encouraging people to sit back and relax. The space is also equipped with a full kitchen, allowing Cynthia who is trained in French pastry, to keep the community happily fed with fresh, house-baked fare. The coffee beans come straight from Indonesia. If you’ve ever tried Indonesian coffee you know it’s hard to beat!
The team at Studio Series Design helped design the warm and inviting space. Natural materials are at the forefront – red brick, textured clay walls, and rich wood panelling. Unlike many other cafes, Pennyroyal Coffee has a bar top that they welcome guests to pull up a seat at. It’s easy to get cozy and inspired by Max’s coffee brewing skills, the delicious aroma, or the other neighbourhood guests hanging out and enjoying this fresh new spot on the east side.
