One day in early 2015, we had a conversation with our good friends at Nineteen Ten discussing this butcher block cart they have in their shop. Everyone loved it, but the piece was not for sale – it was a staple in their shop, and acted as counter space near their cash desk.
What started as one idea to re-create the cart evolved into an exciting collaborative project. Designing and building three distinc pieces, we’ve created a furniture collection together that embodies both of our characters, the heritage feels that we love from Vancouver living, with modern day forms that make them an easy fit into every day living.
We asked Olivia, our designer, to share more on her design inspiration when bringing these pieces to life.
“The E 28 collection was a collaboration between Nineteen Ten and Pacific Design Lab, two companies both located in East Vancouver. Beginning with the material choice of reclaimed butcher block, I wanted to design something different, stemming away from the standard four-legged furniture.
By celebrating the heritage character of this reclaimed wood, I created an asymmetrical waterfall edge, showing its stature and weight. To contrast this heavy material in form, weight, and feel, we used thin angled steel legs to lighten the entire design. This merging of materials mimics our very neighbourhood, a union of East Van heritage with new modem form. This concept then transpired throughout the rest of the pieces, using cross x patterns to imply familiar cross streets, continuing to embrace elements of our beloved Vancouver home.” – Olivia Alvarez
The collection will be unveiled this week at Nineteen Ten Home Boutique. We’re also hosting an official launch party – details below! Feel free to join us celebrate this accessible and versatile line made for Vancouver living.
